Before Covid-19 There Were Human Doings

There was a huge glitch in our system before Covid-19 ever erupted into our world.
From early on, when most people were out with their children and saw a homeless man or woman on the street, they would pull their children away, tell them to keep walking, or make some comment about not talking to "people like that".
Many times I question if I am doing a good job with my own children, but there are definitely moments which solidify that for me.
When we were in Nelson, BC this summer, we encountered one such soul. We spoke to him for a bit, and after we walked away, my son (5 years old) looked at me and asked, "why is the man sitting on the ground?"
I responded by telling him that the man was tired and that sometimes things happen and life is really hard, which is why being grateful for all we have is a very important thing.
He continued on to ask where the man sleeps and where his family is. I said I'm not sure where he sleeps or if he has a family because I don't know him.
After thinking about that for a bit, his little face, filled with five years of wonder, was all scrunched up from concentrating so hard, and he said, "He was a nice man. Maybe we can just be his family."
Think about that for a moment. If a child of five years can show campassion and love without judgment, what does that say for the rest of us? Why is it so hard for people to realize that we are ALL people, ALL trying, ALL living, breathing souls who need love?
There is no "us" and "them". There is simply we...and WE all live in this world together! We all go through things, we all have struggles and triumphs, and we ALL matter.
If I've learned anything in my life, it's that "those people" would give you the shirt off their backs or save your life in a second!
When is the last time you have spoken to any single person who's down on their luck and have really listened to the stories they have to tell?
When is the last time your heart was bigger than your ego?
Covid-19 may be a deadly pandemic, but death in our world already existed in the form of human doings, instead of human beings. Let this be a lesson that there are no "classes" of people--just souls full of struggle, love, overwhelm, dreams, hopes, and fears.
May you never be "too good" to take a seat and listen.
