RV Life: Bylaw vs The Nuts

Ahhh! I haven't written in five days! What has been going on? Let me tell you all a little story. You may have read the newspaper article about us from my previous post, but here is the whole shebang from 4 Nuts In A Shell.

At the end of August 2020, we made it from Port Renfrew, BC, Canada to Sooke, BC, Canada. Upon arriving, we drove down a slight hill and our drive shaft broke in half at the joint. We called a tow to pull us to the side and called a mechanic who came out to us. He said he would come back the next day to assess it better.

On the side of the road we sat.

The first day, a neighbor came and gave us garden vegetables, and stayed for a lovely visit. On the second day, a gentleman and his son parked near us, he told us to watch his son (4 years), dumped him into our home, and didn't return for him for hours.

After a week, and many wonderful people stopping by, a very kind gentleman stopped by with a friend who knew how to fix drive shafts. He looked at it, picked up the part, and fixed it on the spot!

On September 5th, 2020, we found a beautiful private lot to rent and call home over winter in this lovely community.

Two weeks after being at our new, off grid, spot, I was outside with the boys painting for "school" and bylaw came by. He told us that we were not permitted to be on the property, and that our generator was raising complaints (it's below the noise restrictions and we never ran it before 8am or after 8pm), but that we would have time to find somewhere to go with their help.

He then went to visit the property owners and slapped them with a $200 fine for us being here.

They chose to stand with us and fight the ticket in court on December 14th, 2020.

The following couple months for us were filled with mixed emotions--worry, fear, uncertainty, and finally acceptance and optimism for our future, wherever it would take us.

We contacted the local paper as well as CTV News and told them our story. They were intrigued and decided to write an article and film us for the news.

What happened next was incredible! People from all over the world...yes, the WORLD, began reaching out to show support, love, and extend kindness to us.

We had gifts dropped off, cards welcoming us to Sooke, BC, and people offering to help us in any way possible--from places to stay, to mechanical for our rig, to plugging us in when our generator stopped working last week.

At this time, a woman contacted us and said that our chances of winning the court date were good and that the whole town had our back. We were overwhelmed by all the love.

The court date arrived.

The property owners were told by bylaw that we ran our generator all night two nights prior. Ummm, our generator died two days before that.

My phone rang at 10:27am on December 14th, and we were told the ticket was squashed and we could stay until May 1st, 2020.

My exact words were, "Eeeee! Really!?! You are both getting hugs when I see you next, Covid or not." Yes, I squealed like a giddy child over the phone (hahaha).

So what did we learn from all of this? People are powerful. People are full of love, and thinking positively no matter what the situation, makes life so much sweeter. We also learned that people will always detest law officials who are just doing their jobs, and that as soon as you end up in the paper for living in an RV full time, people assume you're poor (hahaha).
