Today is the big day! Your rig is packed, your home is all cleaned out, and you are setting out into the great unknown to start your new life.

Most people feel excited, nervous, maybe a little scared, but are anxious to see what adventures they will embark on.

The first month, you travel a lot, exploring, staying only as long as you like because you have that option. Your newfound freedom is coursing through your veins! You want to see it all and do it all.

A few weeks in, you need to do a minor repair. The setback is frustrating, but, hey, it's only temporary.

Month two comes around and you have two major repairs and a minor one that all need immediate attention. Your stress level rises. You start to worry about your bank accounts surviving your new lifestyle for very long. Everyone in your rig is irritable because you are all stuck at a mechanic shop. Some of you may have a tow vehicle to go out exploring, others may not.

After three weeks, all of those repairs are done. It's back on the road and back to living on your terms once more.

What an adventure you've had so far. Looking back, those repairs happened in a good place. You were close to a garage that could help you. Your moods have all shifted back since being mobile again and life is great once more.

The next place you go to, you plan to stay at a campground instead of boondocking, but once you get there no sites are available. You have three choices:

  1. Get angry, frustrated, and feel defeated

  2. Look at this as an opportunity to see and do more, find a logging road or other place to park

  3. Keep on driving

Here's the problem. The first couple of times this happens, most people would keep driving or shrug it off and find elsewhere to park. However, anyone who moves around a lot, knows this happens a lot, which deters many people.

Booking campsites in advance is tricky also, because no one can account for major delays, repairs, breakdowns, or the like. Because of this, generally speaking, people give themselves a couple "cushion days" in case they don't make it on time.

By doing this, once again, you may be without a "planned" place to go if you get there two days prior to the booking. I can't help but see why people live off grid full time because of this and only drive their rig to campgrounds, or other such facilities, to dump their tanks.

off grid living, freedom, no worries, no stress, rv life, live life on your terms

There is a point that everyone hits in this lifestyle where they are DONE--where they feel going on is just going to keep leading them down a stressful, frustrating path. For some, it comes early on. For others it may take a year or more.

That point hit for me at the four and a half month mark. Every day I was sleeping in a little longer, leaving my husband to deal with the chaos. I felt at that point that I was robbing my children of a stable life--that they would never have friends, sleepovers, big birthday parties, or be in dance or gymnastics, or whatever else they could possibly want.

My youngest (4 years) kept telling me over and over that he didn't like how we were living and that he wanted a house without wheels. It broke my heart every single time he said it.

My oldest (5 years) said he liked our lifestyle, but he struggled every...single...day because of his spectrum gifts. For those of you who don't know what this looks like, take a beautiful hearted, wonderful little boy, and watch him not be able to control his anger, aggression, or outbursts at least fourteen times every single day. It's truly hard to watch. You feel helpless to help him.

My mind was in a terrible place. Money was beyond tight, we had no tow vehicle and our rig needed work we didn't plan on doing because we were planning on selling it and upgrading eventually anyway. In my mind's eye, everything was exploding around me.

4 nuts in a shell, depression, anxiety, too much, life is too hard, someone help

Then, for the first time in a long time, I started analyzing my life objectively. In a couple of days, I realized so much! My kids wouldn't be going to sleepovers, lessons, or birthdays anyway because of Covid-19.

We always made sure our children had a roof over their heads, food in their tummies, and a warm bed--not one single day has ever gone by that they would ever question if our love for them is unconditional or not.

We had the whole world, because we had each other, our dreams, our health, and our resourcefulness. That's when my mindset shifted once more.

4 nuts in a shell, family, health, happiness is homemade, never give up, never alone

You see, no one is happy all of the time, but there are some very happy people who have absolutely nothing but the clothes on their backs. Why are they happy? Because happiness is homemade, my friend. It is all in your mind, how you react to things, and how you view the world around you.

Choose to make your life happy. Choose to see the good and beautiful things you DO have or CAN do. A miserable life is no life at all.
