RV Life: Off Grid During A Canadian Winter

Many people have expressed interest in how exactly we live off grid during wintertime in Canada.

I have to admit, we don't get snow or temperatures below zero often where we are right now or our lifestyle wouldn't be very safe for our children.

Let me first begin by explaining that we have no running or hot water, no heat in our rig (only external sources), no slides, no propane (we run everything on electric), no vehicle, and we do have solar power, but no sun. So how do we do it?

A typical day for us looks something like this:

  • At 5am, Kris gets up and turns on our Buddy Heater that's hooked to a twenty pound propane tank so the rig is warm when the boys get up.

  • Around 7am, the boys get up. My youngest generally has a couple cold breakfasts, my oldest waits a bit to eat in the morning.

  • 8am rolls around and we turn off the propane, start the generator, plug in electric heaters and connect the battery charger. We make coffee at this point. My youngest usually has a third breakfast (or forth, depending which one he's on lol), and my oldest has breakfast.

  • At 12pm, after eating lunch, we turn off the heaters, the generator and the battery charger. If it's above seven degrees Celsius, we generally don't put the propane heat back on unless it's really windy because then the cold comes in more. We try to spend our afternoons out as much as possible at the pier, by the water, at the park, hiking etc. On rainier days, we watch TV, movies, play, etc.

  • From 4pm-8pm we run the generator, connect the battery charger, and turn on the heaters again. During this time, Kris cooks dinner, we eat, and two to three times a week, we heat water in the microwave in bowls for showers (one bowl each).

  • At 8pm, we turn off the heaters, the generator, and the battery charger, and turn on the propane Buddy Heater. We put the boys to bed and run the Buddy Heater until we go to bed between 10-11:30pm when we are finished work, movies, or a TV show.

We have a folding wagon that we use to walk up a steep hill about four blocks to town to get Jerry cans of gas three times a week, propane twice a month, groceries two to three times a week, three jugs of water twice a week for dishes, showers, drinking and cooking, and to do laundry twice a month.

We have a washer in our rig, but have no water hookups, or dumping where we are. Every three weeks, we call a septic truck to come empty us. We also each sleep under three to six quilts to make sure we are warm all night.

We have put plastic over the outside of our windows, except the one by the kitchen table, being sure to puncture a hole in the bottom of each for the humidity to drain out instead of pooling between the plastic and window.

We put foil over all the roof vents to prevent air from coming in, and to reflect heat back down into our home, and we bought a twenty by forty foot tarp (we live in a thirty four foot motorhome), which we are covering the roof with and extending into a "patio" type area tomorrow.

Solar lights are also in our future so we can see outside without our flashlight after 4pm.

Where there is a will, there is a way! We love our lifestyle. It keeps us active and is constantly teaching us new things.
