RV Life: Top 5 Things We Thought Wouldn't Bother Us

Moving from a 2,000 square foot home to a 195 square foot motorhome has been interesting. It also came with many new challenges.

When we began this journey of full time RVing, we were ALL in. We sold everything we owned and dove in super excited and willing to overlook little annoyances we had with our new home.

4 Nuts In A Shell, Full Time RV Life, all or nothing

After having lived this way for seven months, those "little annoyances" grind on us some days. Most are silly things, but they exist, none-the-less.

For anyone who lives this lifestyle, you are probably well aware of these things already. For those of you starting out, perhaps you too are willing to overlook some of them to start living this life as well.

RV life, start living in rv full time, adapt

We have five main things that consistently irritate us, or make our life a little more stressful.

#5--No Hot Water

When we first set out, we didn't have a tankless hot water heater yet, but planned to get one on our travels. Every time we found one, we decided to pass it up because it was summer and we loved the outdoor solar shower we built.

Full time rv life, summertime

We were also boondocking all the time, and rarely had any "spectators" within miles, so it didn't matter. When people were closer, we would shower outdoors in our swim suits.

Now that it's November and has been colder, we obviously aren't showering outside. It has become a real nuisance to start the generator, grab a giant jug of water, fill a bowl, microwave it, "shower", then do it all over three more times for the whole family to get clean.

Lesson learned: get hot water heater, then begin new lifestyle.

#4--Chair Cushions

Our chair cushions at our table CONSTANTLY slide off the seats! We thought, "No big deal, we can overlook this. It's not like it's hard to pull them back up."

4 Nuts In A Shell, table cushions fall off

Then we realized exactly how many times a day four people sit at the table! I got annoyed and decided to "fix" this problem. I bought sticky velcro and stuck them in place.

The velcro didn't even last a day without coming off again. It's very irritating! If anyone else has a solution, do comment below and enlighten me.

Lesson learned: reno the table area before leaving.

#3--No Slides, No Problem

Rv life, no slides in our motorhome

During summer having no slides didn't matter at all because we were rarely indoors.

Cue winter. While we are in a warm place for winter, there is currently a three week period of constant rain.

This space seems smaller daily! No one can walk without hitting someone else. If you need to go anywhere, there is always at least one person who has to relocate all the way to the back or front of the rig so another can get by to go to any other area.

Don't even get me started on what it's like to cook in the thinnest area of our rig with two kids playing in the WHOLE rig!

Lesson learned: a slide in the living quarters would be a dream come true!

#2--Entranceway

The entranceway to our rig has a kitchen cupboard on one side and the living room on the other. This is similar to many rigs; however, with our bed folded down, that space becomes smaller than two square feet!

With four pairs of shoes, there isn't standing space. We end up stomping on everything, tripping, and having to come into our house one at a time while the others stay outside and wait.

Lesson learned: standing together in the entrance of our home without shoes all over would save many injuries.

#1--Master Bedroom

My husband is 6'7" tall. That being said, there was no way we would fit together on the pull out sofa that was in our rig originally (and it was gross having been from 1988 haha). For those of you who watched our reno video, you know that we built a king sized fold down bed that doubles as a sofa.

Fold out couch in rv

We thought it would be no problem to fold it down every night and back up every morning. The issue here isn't with the fact we have to do so either.

What bothers us is that we have two twin mattresses that we have to put on top the driver/passenger seats and heap with blankets every time we fold the bed up, leaving our two twin mattress toppers for the couch seat.

During this process, all of the mattresses need to be pushed down the hall, filling our entire living space, and all of our blankets flood the kitchen table so we can fold the bed up and move it all into the driving area.

Rv life, where does all the bedding go

On drive days, there is a giant heap of mattresses and blankets which once resembled a couch blocking half the window.

We long EVERY...SINGLE...DAY for a bedroom where the bed stays made and our things all have a place.

On days when we don't fold it all up quickly, it becomes a trampoline/wrestling ring for our boys and we are forced into their bedroom in the back so we can sit down.

Lesson learned: we require a bedroom for our sanity.

End goals: invest in a tow behind so we have a tow vehicle to go out exploring in, have our own bedroom, have a bunk house with an extra table in it, larger entranceway, at least one slide, and a dinette that doesn't have to be reassembled upon each bottom touching it.
