RV Life: Doing Laundry on the Road

How do I do my laundry while I'm travelling or boondocking full time? Well, I'm glad you asked. There are a few ways for people to ensure they don't smell like a two week old dumpster when rolling in and out of places.

For Boondockers
As I'm sure you all know by now, my family is strictly off grid RV lifers. We like to be in the middle of nowhere doing our thing as much as humanly possible. The question we always get asked is, "How do you get your laundry done?" We have completed this task a couple ways.
Generally, we would stop to dump our tanks and fill up our water the same as anyone else living this lifestyle. We were fortunate enough that when we were completing our renos, we allotted space in our rig for a washing machine. Because of this, we had the means to do our laundry on the road. That being said, I can hear you all thinking in your heads, "What about overflowing your gray water tank?"

We do laundry once every two weeks and generally have about two to three full loads of laundry. Because of this, we DID run into issues. Our washing machine is a 24 inch compact machine with a drum size of 2.8 cubic feet, so it holds a lot of clothing. Our gray tank can only hold two and a half loads worth of laundry water, however. So what did we do?
Well, besides the time we found out exactly how much water our gray tank could hold and had to bail it out of the tub after we discovered what the rotten egg smell was(haha), we came up with a system. When out in the middle of nowhere, we have no one to impress, so we would have "dirty clothes" and indoor clothes. No, our "dirty clothes" were not filthy and did not smell like the rear end of a scared skunk.
We would wear as few clothes as possible while still maintaining our hygiene, do one load to accommodate dish and shower water going into the same tank, and hang it outside in the sun on a clothesline to dry, which I loved to do.

When we had a bunch of laundry, we would get a campsite for two nights, and I would spend the whole day catching up on laundry once a month so we would have clothing for another two weeks.
This worked great for us, as we are a family of four, and are very low maintenance. We never stayed anywhere longer than seven to fourteen days, so when we would move, we would dump and start the process over again.
For RV Parkgoers
This seems like a no-brainer, but I will address it anyway. If you are hooked up to services, do your laundry with your gray tank open, and close the valve when you are done. If you do not have dump services at your site, do your laundry, go dump, and then enjoy the rest of your stay, being sure to do your laundry before leaving and dumping upon departure.
For People Without a Washing Machine
If you do not have a washing machine in your rig, don't worry! Most campgrounds have laundry services that are either free or coin operated. If you don't like staying at parks, again, no worries. There are laundromats in almost ever single town everywhere that you can take your laundry to.

If you go this route, my best advice is to fold your laundry how you need it in your rig before you leave the laundromat. That way you are not taking out of the machine, carting it home and having to fold and put it away when you get there. It maximized your other time by doing this.
All in all, enjoy the journey, laugh along the way, and when in doubt ask people you come into contact with. You may be surprised how helpful strangers can be!
