RV Life: Top 10 Things to Leave Behind

Time and time again I see posts from people who have too much stuff, or have taken far too much into their rigs and are at a loss when it comes to doing something with it all. Below are 10 things you should not bring with you when you start RVing.

1) Photographs

This was especially hard for me, as I grew up with albums and physical photos and loved flipping through them. The fact of the matter is, photo books are heavy, take up a lot of space, and are rarely looked at. I suggest going digital, or keeping the memories in your head and hearts, rather than your books.

2) Filing Cabinet

It sounds silly, but I know people who tried to bring them. They are heavy, and you don't need them with you! Grab a plastic bin with a lid to store old stuff in, and an accordian one for the current year. It's much easier to store. If you are worried about moisture getting in, place silicone packets inside and swap them out every so often.

3) ALL of Your Clothes and Shoes

Seriously. Unless you plan to go to fancy dinners every night of the week, ditch the dress clothes! I have one nice dress just in case, but other than that, only bring what you will wear in 1.5-2 weeks. Everything else NEEDS TO GO!

As for shoes, one pair of runners, one pair of sandals, one pair of winter boots is all anyone in our family has ever used. Excess is just "stuff". Clutter does not enhance life.

Pare down, clothes, simplify, rv life, small space living

4) Glassware

Wherever possible swap it out. Plates, bowls, glasses etc. They WILL move around a lot and will get damaged or broken unless you wrap them up every time you move locations.

5) Large Toys

If you want space to walk, don't bring large toys unless the are easily buildable and you are willing to unbuild them ALL THE TIME! Outside is big enough for kids. Keep the small and medium stuff indoors only.

6) Oversized Anything

Giant things, small space, common sense, enough said.

7) Negative Attitude

If you're going to be negative about everything, you will have the worst experience ever. Leave that garbage with your old self in your old surroundings.

8) Others Perceptions and Opinions

Unless someone is physically in your body, living your life, have some faith in yourself and your abilities to choose what's right for you! NO ONE'S opinions or comments should EVER matter if you know you are doing what YOU want or need to do. They are not the one living your life!

9) Things You Don't Use Now

A good rule to have is of it's not used in one month, ditch it. Others pack up everything into boxes and anything that is not removed for use in one month is donated.

10) Picture of an "Ideal" Life

What you see spread all over social media IS part of living in an RV, but you have to also remember that the people behind those photos are just that...people. They still go through all the same things as everyone else. Life is what you make it. So handle moments wisely.

Happy family, rv life, just people

I hope this helps someone out and that you all enjoy your travels and RV lifestyle as much as we do!
