Which RV is Right For Me?

How do you decide which RV is going to be best for you? If you're like us, you found the one in your price range that fit most of your needs to begin your RV lifestyle and decided to just deal with the little things you thought you could live with.

While it's a terrific idea to get out on the road as soon as you can and work with what you have until you are able to upgrade, we have found that now that we have been living in our rig for almost a year, there are things that we feel we need in our new rig that our current one doesn't have.

For instance, our list originally was:

  • a bunkhouse for our two boys

  • a working kitchen

  • a living and dining area

  • a bathroom

Because of this short list, we found a 1988, Class A, Coachmen Royal Motorhome and thought it would be terrific. Don't get me wrong, we LOVE our home, but since then, our list has changed, due to the hassles we have had in some areas while living.

Now our list looks something like this:

  • a larger bunkhouse for our boys

  • a living and dining area with a larger table and chairs instead of bench seats so we can spread out more and all fit at the table (my husband is 6'7" and we cannot all sit at the table)

  • our own bedroom so we don't have to convert the couch every morning and night

  • hot water (we have no hot water heater)

  • a working toilet (we bypassed ours when it started to leak so we can choose when to put water down it)

  • slides (we currently have none and long for more space so we aren't tripping over each other all the time)

  • an island (we NEED more kitchen space)

  • a towable and truck so we can go see more things and get supplies without packing up our whole rig (also, if the truck or trailer has issues, we don't have to be without our home AND vehicle!)

  • an awning (ours ripped off in the wind)

  • a tv and fireplace (currently we have neither, we use our phones for tv)

  • propane to cook and heat with (we are 100% electric and it kills our batteries too fast)

As you can see, after being on the road for a while, your perceptions change according to your needs. My strong suggestion is to make a list of everything you can possibly think of and either get something that will work for now, but have plans on how to get the money to upgrade down the road, or to get what you want the first time around.

If you have kids, MAKE SURE you have enough space for them! Storms come when you are all locked up inside and, while most full time RV families spend most of their time outdoors, during those times spent indoors, your kids will run, bounce, pull everything out, and you have to make sure you can still get to your kitchen and bathroom to cook and relieve yourself! Alas, we cannot haha.

If you are going to be off grid like we are, be sure that you are either willing to pack up the whole rig every time you need something, or get a towable so you are able to run in with your truck to get supplies. Also be aware that, while there are many places to park your rig, parking in towns and cities will oftentimes not be doable, especially in the mountains, so having a town vehicle is a HUGE bonus if you don't want to remain in and around your rig all the time.

Little things like this can make or break an RV living experience. They cause tensions to build as you all trip over each other, step on toys, or cannot go places due to messiness (which happens regardless how much time you spend inside). Whether you DO have kids, a dog, or live with one other person, do not overlook your needs. If you live alone, this will be a lot easier, but when others are there, you will be tested if you do not have any space at all to move.
