RV Life: The Secret Code

If you go to a campground, you can clearly see who is out there for the weekend, or who full times.

weekend camper or full time RV or van lifer

If this isn't apparent to you, the weekenders generally have booze, are louder, are constantly flitting from place to place trying to "get it all in" before they have to leave, and the full timers are more slow paced and relaxed--reading outside, going for leisurely strolls, banging out hoards of laundry etc.

Smiling and saying hi to a weekender, generally results in a smile or hi back. Smiling and saying hi to a lifer, generally results in a, "where are you coming from", "where are you heading", "how long have you been doing this", or other questions because we like to hear others stories.

When out boondocking or offgrid living, the lifers are generally exploring nature, taking in the outdoors, occasionally treating themselves to a meal out. The weekenders are generally nervous looking, checking their watches constantly, hitting all the tourist spots and attractions that cost money, and eating out a lot more because they haven't mastered RV kitchen cooking yet (it truly is an art!).

As a lifer, you can walk up to another lifer and ask almost anyone anything you need a solution for, and chances are good they will have one. You can contact groups on Facebook about even the silliest sounding things, and you will find answers.

As a weekender...well...find a lifer and ask them for advice or help (haha).

So what exactly is the RV and vanlife code?

  • Help anyone who needs it because you will more than likely be there one day too.

  • Enjoy every moment.

  • Talk to everyone you meet instead of just exchanging simple pleasantries, as this is your social interaction. You're not "going back" to your other life--this IS your life.

  • Live life on your terms, slow down, take time for others questions, and really hear what others have to say, instead of just listening to respond.

  • Don't be scared or think it's silly to ask questions! WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE!

  • *bonus code: wave frantically at all fellow passersby while driving (hahaha)

So get out there, do your thing, and remember, life is only as beautiful as the artist who paints it.
