RV Life: What Does It Cost?

When we first purchased our motorhome, we were told it was reckless and impractical, as we had no other vehicle.

Fast forward to Covid-19 hitting.

Covid-19

Through the chaos and changes taking place--businesses being forced to close their doors, layoffs, social distancing--we were then told we were smart, as we moved into our motorhome when I got laid off and our home daycare closed. We own it outright, have no debt, and got rid of house rent all in one foul swoop.

People hit a state of panic when they had no online or passive sources of income, but we already did, as we worked tirelessly learning and finding new and creative ways to make income, having wanted for so long to be home with our children and to stop building up others dreams instead of working on our own.

Businesses began opening up again and people went back to their previous lives, with slight alterations of course.

Now, businesses have begun to close down again. Those same people are in panic mode...again, having learned nothing from the previous closures and the world trying to force us to change.

For us, the first closure affected us as mentioned above. Once we moved into our motorhome, everything has been the same for us every day, regardless of the world's current state. Are we still reckless? Were our choices still impractical? I think not.

no Covid here, every day the same, live life on your terms, 4 Nuts In A Shell

You see, as a full time RV family, life doesn't need to change. We adjust, yes, but we are still in our home (which is paid for), spending less than we were.

Before our monthly expenses looked something like this:

  • Rent: $1,200.00 (water and hydro included)

  • Phones: $300.00 (we tether for tv)

  • Netflix $8.00

  • Insurance: $70.00

  • Groceries and Other Household Needs: $1,000.00

  • Diapers: $175.00

  • Gas: $200.00

Total: $2,953.00

It's worth noting that our stress levels were very high because we didn't want to live working for someone else...our physical and emotional health is priceless. That's no way to live.

4 Nuts In A Shell, we chose RV life, no more depression
January 23, 2019

Now, our monthly expenses look something like this:

  • Rent: $650.00 (just over winter)

  • Phones: $300.00 (we tether for tv)

  • Netflix: $8.00

  • Disney Plus: $9.00

  • Insurance: $70.00

  • Groceries and Other Household Items: $1,000.00

  • Diapers: $175.00

  • Gas For Generator: $300.00

  • Propane: $60.00

  • Septic Empty: $150.00

Total: $2,722.00

It's worth noting that we are 100% off grid, and pay for septic to come to us. We are happy, feel little stress compared to before, have our freedom and Disney movies!

We also spend more than this while on the road all of the time for maintenance and repairs. Over the course of the last year (including renovating our motorhome, and topping up fluids) we spent an average of $1,220.00 per month on renos and repairs.

As you can see above, our old incomes would have fallen short for this, but they don't anymore.

So, we save $231.00 a month (right now) living a more fulfilling, less stressful life than we did before!

debt free, saving money, rv life

Because we don't pay rent from April to September (six months), we are saving another $650.00 on top of that for those six months! For those of you who aren't good at math, that's $6,672.00 we are saving each year that we would have been doling out to someone else.

Our goal wasn't to save money when we began full timing, it was to enjoy life. Saving was a byproduct of our choices.

Besides saving, we make more, work much less, and are home with our children every day.

All in all, choosing to live a full time RV life was a huge step in the right direction for us, but we all must keep in mind that this was a choice for us so we could travel full time. There are still bad days/weeks and months, but we are where we choose to be, doing what we want to be doing every day. That makes all the difference.
